Rosecrest and Salt Lake County Unveil Plans for Newly Named J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center
Support for the New High-Quality, Multi-Purpose Recreation Center Facility Was Provided by Rosecrest and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, which Together Donated Land and $5 Million to the Facility to Serve the Communities of Southwest Salt Lake County
HERRIMAN CITY, UT (June 30, 2008) – The Sorenson Group, developer of the master-planned community Rosecrest, and Salt Lake County today unveiled plans for the Southwest Recreation Center. Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon also announced that the facility – which will serve the residents of Herriman, Riverton and Bluffdale Cities and surrounding areas – will be called the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center.
The center, funded through the Zoo, Arts and Parks Tax, will be located in the heart of the newly announced Herriman Towne Center development (see related press announcement release today), adjacent to an elementary school and planned full-service Salt Lake County library.
In June of 2006, Mayor Corroon, the Salt Lake County Council and the Zoo, Arts and Parks Board appropriated $24.5 million to create a recreation center in the rapidly growing southwest portion of the valley. The Sorensen Legacy Foundation and Rosecrest donated an additional $5 million and the Jordan School District donated $1 million to make the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center a reality.
The creation of the center is a collaborative project between Salt Lake County, Herriman City, Rosecrest and the Jordan School District. Rosecrest donated 20 acres of land to Herriman City for civic use, which in turn donated 15 acres to Salt Lake County for development of the recreation center and library.
“The Sorenson Group is a true community builder, and this is collaborative public-private partnership at its best,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. “The J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center fills a genuine unmet need on the parts of the citizens in the southwest part of our county and will play a key role in the communities it serves for decades to come.”
The new, amenity-rich recreation facility is expected to include:
- A competition-size indoor swimming pool
- Indoor leisure pool with slides, lazy river, and water play equipment
- A drop-in daycare area
- Competition racquetball courts
- An indoor running and walking track
- A substantial party/reception area for recreational and business functions
- Two full-size indoor basketball courts
- A diverse set of exercise/fitness equipment
- A dance and aerobics studio
- Future development will include a full-size outdoor multipurpose field
The design and construction of the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center will utilize advanced design principles and modern building technologies and materials to maximize its longevity. The center will be constructed under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
“It is a deeply rewarding experience to work with Mayor Corroon, Mayor [J. Lynn] Crane of Herriman City and their exceptional teams to create a state-of-the-art recreation facility for the community,” said James Lee Sorenson, CEO of The Sorenson Group. “This will make the Southwest Salt Lake County even more of a destination; residents will now be able to enjoy both excellent recreational amenities and up-close access to the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.”
